A new Finnish company, ISCENT OY, has introduced a printable 'holographic-like' film technology for plastic-based and fibre-based packages, which was developed by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). The company refers to the product as Light Scattering Effects in bright and changing colours and states that the technology can be used to make authentication labels, and it can also be used as a contamination indicator by making the diffraction grating swell in the presence of water or other liquids. It also claims that it is a more environmentally sensitive method of producing these effects than using holograms as no additional material is needed - there is no metallizing, no lacquers or lamination required.
