Noda, Maehara, Koshiishi have heated debate over tax hike

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Azuma Koshiishi and DPJ Policy Research Committee Chairman Seiji Maehara were engaged in a delicate balancing act during Wednesday's intraparty screening of bills to raise the consumption tax rate.
DPJ executive members were barely able to overcome party members who opposed the tax hike during the screening, which concluded before dawn Wednesday, but Noda, Koshiishi and Maehara differed in their stances over role-sharing and strategies.
At 6:48 p.m. Tuesday, Noda, Koshiishi, Maehara and Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada gathered at the prime minister's official residence.
