On Thursday [23 February], the milestone Somalia Conference took place in London. There was a strong sense among participants that after 20 years of chaos, the conflict in Somalia could end in the next year or so with the defeat of Al-Shabab.

What is almost never discussed is where the present military and Amisom interventions that could eventually stabilise Somalia, came from. They came from, first, one of the most murderous and corrupt military rulers in Africa ever, Nigeria's Sani Abacha. …
