JOHN Davis and Son, in Amen Alley (Bygones, January 30) was where I met my husband, who sadly died last year. I started work at the firm a few weeks before my 16th birthday, which was on February 6, 1952, the day the King died and Elizabeth became Queen.

I worked in the buying office and it was all very formal. Everyone was Mr or Miss, although the girls used any excuse to visit the top shop where all the young lads worked. They cheered and whistled whenever a girl walked through.
