KUALA LUMPUR: THE arts are important in education and it must be emphasised on students, said the Education Ministry's co-curriculum and arts division director, Muhamat Roli Hassan.

He said adequate exposure of fine arts to students would spur them to pursue a career in the field.

"Malaysia is a multiracial country with various ethnic groups and greater involvement in the arts will ultimately project the country internationally. This would also assist in boosting the country's tourism," he said at the launch of the 1Malaysia Students Arts Carnival 2011 at Kompleks Kraf, Jalan Conlay.
