FARMING TRACTOR SALES Revved up to plough Farmers are investing in new agricultural machinery at levels last seen almost three decades ago, an indication that they expect the sector to thrive in the near future.

Tractor sales of 979 were reported for October, continuing the rising trend from the previous month, when 893 tractors were sold. The October sales were 60% higher than October 2010. The October sales are the highest recorded in that month for 28 years, says SA Agricultural Machinery Association chairman Lane Reynolds.

In addition, the sale of 45 combine harvesters to the grain sector dwarfed the 10 sold in October last year. …
