Susan Cole in her column [Herizons, Summer 2010) couldn't have better articulated my feelings since the Quebec government restricted the wearing of the niqab.

Beware, Quebeckers and Canadians, fascism begins with baby steps. I was brought up in India where the niqab, hijab, chador and burka happily coexist with bare-breasted, headshaven high-caste widows, sexy sari-exposed midriffs, topless tribal women, naked holy men and pacifist Jain women who cover their faces so as not to inadvertently kill an insect by swallowing it. I was also given a sound education by women who wore their own version of the hijab and were not allowed to wear lipstick, jewellery or bright colours, …
