The ancient Near Eastern culture conventionally known as Syro-Hittite flourished in what is today northern Syria and southeastern Turkey during the late second and early first millennia B.C.E. A collection of a dozen or so Syro-Hittite city-states were prominent features of the region's political world during the Iron Age II period, roughly 900-725 B.C.E. This dissertation seeks to understand how these city-states operated politically by examining in detail the city-state of Patina as a case study.
