US congressman visits Bahrain, says Iran plans "to split" Gulf alliance.

An Iranian plan to destabilize Bahrain and break up the alliance of GCC countries was evident from a terrorist plot to overthrow the government last year, says a top US congressman.

Eni Faleomavaega said the seeds of its intentions were clear following the arrest of 23 men charged with planning and executing "a campaign of violence and intimidation".

The suspects, detained in September 2010, were accused of 12 offences, including instigating sectarian hatred, spreading provocative propaganda to destabilise security, taking part in acts of sabotage and creating an organization with the aim of overthrowing the regime.
