I WAS shocked to read about the jailing of an Iranian actress and the sentence of 90 lashes for appearing in a movie that has been banned in Iran.

The "infamous" movie which led Marzieh Vafamehr into trouble was My Teheran for Sale.

She was arrested last July and sentenced to a year in prison and 90 lashes. Her lawyer had appealed the sentence.

According to the media reports, the film "was shot in the Iranian capital and is critical of the Islamic republic's hardline policies. The film tells the story of a young actress whose stage work is banned by the authorities".
