* The gap between the fastest and slowest growing English regions is now at the widest that it has been for two years, according to the Lloyds TSB regional Purchasing Managers' Index.

Although higher levels of business activity across all nine regions had been recorded, London posted by far the strongest expansion and the north-west and south-west registered marginal output growth.
