A mysterious theft involving a sword and one of Leicester's best-known landmarks has got the city council scratching its head.

Sometime in September, thieves stole the weapon held by Simon de Montfort in a statue which stands on one of the four pillars of the Clock Tower in the city centre.

A stone hand in which the sword was grasped was recovered by Leicester City Council after apparently falling from the statue.

But the authority has not been able to find the 4ft-long metal sword itself. John Burrows, a member of Leicester Civic Society and its chairman until 2007, reported …
