Sometimes places can surprise you. Take the Wirral, for instance. It's not the most obvious choice for a break if you fancy venturing towards the north west of England.

To the left is the popular North Wales coast. To the right and up, a wonderful sandy coastline that stretches through Crosby, Formby and Southport. That leaves the bit in the middle, the Wirral peninsula, an area covering about 60 square miles. Not the biggest space, but one that packs in plenty and offers a diverse range of activities for people of all ages.

We were based bang in the middle, in the four-star Thornton Hotel & Spa that fringes the pretty village …
