Firstsite, Colchester, an arts centre variously dubbed The Golden Banana, or -- by one aggrieved correspondent of the local paper -- "the overpriced bling bikeshed", finally opens to the public on Sunday.
The spectacular Rafael Vinoly-designed building, a swoop of glass and metal beside and on top of the remains of the first Roman town in Britain, was originally projected to cost GBP18m and open in 2008. It would have been one of the first of the major new lottery backed regional arts centres, but will now probably be the last.
