Sept. 12--When volunteers scour 15 Erie sites during the 26th annual International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday, they'll collect and document the usual mess -- discarded soda and water bottles, plastic shopping bags, cigarette butts and fast-food wrappers, along with other junk.

This is the ninth year that Erie has participated in the ICC, which the Ocean Conservancy started to raise global awareness of the environment.

More than 1,400 volunteers will comb 15 miles of the Lake Erie shoreline and its tributaries from 9 a.m. to noon. "The volunteers make the International Coastal Cleanup a success," says Don Benczkowski of the Coastal Resources Management program …
