Sept. 09--Greeley residents have always been generous with their money and time when it comes to our nonprofit agencies and organizations.

Take, for instance, Greeley resident Herschel Phelps. After his wife died, Phelps began volunteering for a variety of organizations. One, the Humane Society of Weld County, benefited from Phelps walking dogs -- animals that otherwise spent their days cooped up in cages.

One dog in particular, a boxer-St. Bernard mix, endeared itself to Phelps, who eventually adopted the animal, naming him Tony. Tony has a good life with Phelps, getting his ears scratched when he places his large head in his owner's lap, walking on the Poudre …
