A little boy who made British medical history when he underwent pioneering heart surgery was today looking forward to starting school.

Oliver Pole, four, from Dishley, Loughborough, was joining his older brother Jacob, seven, at Stonebow Primary School - barely two-and-a-half years after his life was saved by surgeons at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Although still small for his age, his parents, Jan and Matt, admit that this is a day they never thought they would see.
