Balaalo Eviction Deadline Expires.

An ultimatum issued by Nwoya District council for the Balaalo pastoralists to leave the district voluntarily expired yesterday. District officials, who last week gave a five-day notice, warned of forcible eviction if the Balaalo do not heed the ultimatum.

The ultimatum follows continued complaints from the locals demanding that they leave the area. The deadline expired over the weekend, beyond which the pastoralists will have their animals seized.

The pastoralists, who entered the district with more than 14,000 head of cattle in 2009, mainly settled in Purongo, Anaka and Koch Goma sub-counties where locals claim the animals have become a …
