from THE JAKARTA POST -- SATURDAY, AUGUST 06, 2011 -- PAGE 6 Ramadhan, the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, has come again. The month is sacrosanct, as it was during Ramadhan that the Koran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

All over the world, Muslims observe this very special month by fasting (shaum) -- abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk.

Many believe fasting helps us develop the quality of self-control and self-denial by purification of our soul and by putting a bridle on our uncontrolled emotions such as anger, envy, gluttony, lust, pride and selfishness.
