Aug. 09--WE HAD a little fun recently after Ryan Howard ended his 154 at-bat homerless drought against lefthanded pitchers when an anonymous reader brought up an interesting point. The guy wondered how we could pick on Howard without offering what other lefthanded sluggers were doing against lefties. Fair enough. Through the weekend, six of the 25 major leaguers who had hit at least 20 home runs this season were lefthanded hitters. Howard may have the fewest homers of this group, but he hasn't been the dog that Carlos Pena has. The Cubs' first baseman is hitting a meager .118 against southpaws.
