July 01--As family lore goes, Charlie Mitchell bought his brother Willie his first trumpet. Imagine what might have happened had one brother not helped out another. The legendary career of Willie Mitchell -- musician, bandleader, producer -- might never have happened, except for that bit of kindness from an older brother to a younger one.

"Willie took the inclination when he was very young and wanted to play the trumpet. They went down there to Beale Street and bought it for him," said Charlie's son, William Mitchell. Charlie Mitchell, who spent 45 years working for American Airlines, died Monday of kidney failure. He …
