June 29--Don't look for the familiar blue Highmark name on a hospital marquee any time soon. Despite Highmark's announcement Tuesday that it is acquiring West Penn Allegheny Health System, the national federation that operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies prohibits attaching the Highmark name to hospitals. Highmark officials told the Tribune-Review they haven't determined a new name. Whatever it's called, the new alliance led by the state's largest insurer all but ensures the survival of the cash-strapped West Penn Allegheny, the region's second-largest hospital network behind UPMC.
