t could never be described as the most impressive-looking piece of fitness equipment.
A solid lump of cast iron that resembles a cannonball with a handle, the kettlebell looks rather dull compared to familiar workout accessories such as stability balls, rowing machines, and cross trainers.
But what is impressive, according to Pete Luffman, are the results that a kettlebell can produce. "It's like having a gym in the palm of your hand," he enthuses. "Using a kettlebell gives you an excellent combination of cardio, flexibility and strength training.
"It's a very effective way of burning fat, yet you only need to do a 30-minute workout."
Pete discovered kettlebells when he was working as a personal trainer at a gym in Bristol, and now runs Bristol Kettlebell Club.
"One of the other trainers at the gym where I was working was using them, and I was intrigued as I'd never heard of them before.
