After studying sailors' skin, Paul Unna, a doctor in Germany, reports a link between sun exposure and skin cancer.

1936

French chemist EugA[umlaut]ne Schueller (the founder of L'OrA[c]al) invents a sunscreen called Ambre Solaire.

1940s

The U.S. Army provides soldiers with "red vet pet," a sunscreen made of veterinary petroleum gel, although it is sticky and stains fabrics.
