In Uganda, many people fear leaving the public service at the retirement age of 60 years for fear of the risks involved in unsalaried work like farming. This is not true with Mr John Bosco Lwanga of Kaliro district.

Mr Lwanga, 52 years old, a resident of Nyalinyali-Bugobero village in Butege parish in Namugongo sub-county, Kaliro, retired from the public service at the age of 38 years to engage in farming.

He first worked as an instructor at the then Busitema Agricultural College [now Busitema University] and, later, was transferred to Kaliro National Teachers' College as a Foreman before becoming an Estates Officer of the college in 2003. But life was not becoming any better in the …
