The Delhi government decided that by September 2014, all vehicles in the city will have to install high security, tamper proof number plates carrying holograms, in a bid to check vehicle theft. For new vehicles, such plates will be introduced later this year.
On June 1, 2005, the Indian Government amended rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, mandating introduction of new tamper-proof High Security Registration (HSRP) number plates. All new motorised road vehicles that came into the market after needed to adhere to the new plates, while existing vehicles had been given two years to comply.
