In their recently published study, Richard E. Belanger, M.D., and colleagues found evidence of a U-shaped relationship between intensity of adolescent Internet use and depression and somatic complaints. Regarding clinical implications, the authors suggest that health professionals should not only pay close attention to adolescents who report heavy Internet use, but also to those who report very little or no Internet use. Unlike most studies of digital technology use among youth, the current study considers that boys and girls may have distinct patterns of use and experience unique health outcomes.
