Three of Scotland's top police officers have openly attacked plans for a single national force.

Grampian Police Chief Constable Colin McKerracher joined counterparts George Graham, of Northern Constabulary, and Patrick Shearer, of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, to condemn the proposed reforms yesterday.

They warn that the changes would be too costly and could be achieved only by reducing officer numbers.

The Scottish Government is currently consulting about potential police reforms in the face of public-sector funding cuts.
