Independents flourish amid ANC turmoil IEC pleased with broadening of participation at local level, writes DISCORD over the African National Congress's (ANC's) local government candidate list process in several provinces has given several independent candidates a real chance of victory in next month's municipal elections. The Eastern Cape has been a hotbed of protest about the ANC's lists and the province subsequently has the second-highest number of independent candidates, with an increase from 129 in the last municipal elections to 156.
