UPM comes up with 'mate' that's better than salt.

SERDANG: CardioMate may be the answer for health-conscious people who intend to reduce their salt intake.

This is a new type of salt that can reduce a person's blood pressure and the risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases, its makers say.

Developed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), it is intended to replace the "unhealthy" common salt.

Faculty of Food Science and Technology Biosains Institute researcher Professor Dr Suhaila Mohamed said CardioMate was produced from seaweed and palm leaf extract. It could be used as an additive in food preparation or as an appetiser.
