The cliché that our people have been turned into beggars by failed government policies came alive in the most disgraceful manner during the campaign period.

At the bottom of the rung were the village hobos who are addicted alcoholics. I arrived in remote villages as early as 9a.m. and found men and women already drunk and they asked for a refill. The real full-time drinkers are at the grassroots and they pose a very disturbing social problem. The sophisticated 'detoothers' approached me with funding proposals for community projects.
