Beijing, 28 Jan (Xinhua) - On 26 January, Premier of the State Council, Wen Jiabao, hosted a State Council executive meeting to study ways to further harness the Huaihe River.

It was pointed out at the meeting that disasters along the Huaihe - including floods, torrents, and drought - have been occurring frequently, and harnessing the Huaihe is a long-running task. Years of efforts to harness the river have led to great progress, with 19 backbone projects having been completed and the anti-flood ability having been improved notably. In addition, flood control and disaster alleviation work has led to notable results.
