BN to pick 21 new candidates.

KUCHING: Barisan Nasional has narrowed down the list of candidates for the April 16 Sarawak election, proposing more than one person for each seat.

A source said the BN leadership would begin screening the prospective candidates at today's meeting between BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and state BN leaders.

There will be 21 new BN candidates this time, compared with 16 first-timers in the May 2006 state election. This means one-third of the 71 constituencies will see fresh faces in the election. Nomination day is next Wednesday.

Among them will be religious leaders, engineers and education officers.

Those retained are deemed to be "winnable candidates".

Such is the emphasis on youthful vigour that the preliminary list projects divisional youth leaders for seats such as Demak …
