KUALA LUMPUR: It is a common perception here that many writers or authors struggle to make ends meet due to fluctuating income.

"The government stepped in recently to help by approving a RM2 million annual grant to buy books directly from writers or authors," said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

He said usually, it was the middle-men who profited the most at the expense of the artist or scholar who laboured to produce their literary works.
