Prospects are uncertain as to how the forthcoming Tokyo gubernatorial election will unfold given that popular incumbent Gov. Shintaro Ishihara is unlikely to run for a fourth term.
Ishihara is expected to announce his decision not to run in the April 10 election on Friday. The election, if held in the absence of a shoo-in candidate, is expected to become a fierce battleground.
The Liberal Democratic Party, which planned to support Ishihara, and its foe, the Democratic Party of Japan, have yet to decide which candidates they will field or support as Ishihara's potential successor.
The two parties must make their decision before March 24, …
