Over-supply problem has to be tackled, egg producers are told.

The boss of one of Scotland's biggest egg producers warned yesterday that farm-gate prices are unlikely to improve until the industry tackles an over-supply issue.

Robert Chapman, of Strichen-based Farmlay Eggs, said there could be 3million too many laying hens in the UK.

Mr Chapman said egg packers had a lot to answer for as they had compounded the over supply situation by handing out contracts to new producers until fairly recently.

He added: 'I think this is a totally irresponsible thing to do. Some producers are going to have to disappear if the market is to be corrected.'
