DAGUPAN CITYMeet the candy lady. For more than 40 years, Loreta Capito, 72, has been churning out coconut pastillas and other sweets from her backyard in the village of Lasip Grande here.

The house of Capito and her husband, Leopoldo, 72, lies in a quiet neighborhood. There is no signboard to lead buyers to their residence. But business does come to the couples doorstep.

We do not deliver anymore. Buyers come here for their orders and purchases, says Loreta.

The couples backyard has become a factory bustling with activity. Each day, two men vigorously stir grated coconuts and sugar in two large vats. …
