South Korea: Samsung's Q4 net up 13 pct on smartphone sales, chips.

Section: General News - Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, said Friday that its fourth-quarter net profit rose 13 percent from a year ago as strong smartphone sales and high-end chips outweighed TV losses.

Net income reached 3.42 trillion won (US$ 3.07 billion) in the October-December period, compared with 3.04 trillion won a year ago, it said in a regulatory filing.

The bottom line was better than expected. Samsung Electronics, also the world's No. 2 mobile phone maker and the biggest liquid crystal display (LCD) supplier, was expected to earn 3.08 trillion won in the quarter, according to Yonhap Infomax, the financial news …
