President Jacob Zuma returns to the scene of his greatest political triumph tomorrow to deliver the African National Congress's (ANC's) 99th birthday message - at the start of a year that will severely challenge the party and Mr Zuma's own leadership.

Three years ago Mr Zuma was still celebrating his accession to the presidency of the ANC at the expense of former president Thabo Mbeki. Now Mr Zuma surveys a much-altered political landscape.
