Hopeless in Africa While many African leaders plead for respect from the international community some just don't care what anyone thinks about their behaviour it should be noted that we are our own worst enemies.

Our continent is continually in the news for the wrong reasons. If it's not despots and dictators, racism, civil war, tribalism, pirates or blood diamonds, it's leadership mired in controversies polygamy, corruption, rigged elections and bigotry.

Believing that spin doctors will make such negative publicity go away or that the fanfare around major sporting and cultural events will change perceptions is not only shortsighted, but …
