San Francisco given America's Cup go-ahead after last-ditch talks.

The next staging of the America's Cup will be held in San Francisco in 2013. The decision was reached at the 11th hour -- the announcement had to be made by the end of last year and it was not until 6pm West Coast time (2am 1 January GMT) that the negotiations were completed. The announcement by the America's Cup Event Authority -- a body independent of the Cup defender -- came after talks with an Italian venue, Newport Rhode Island and San Francisco.

Richard Worth, the chief executive of the Event Authority, defended the late deadline, saying: "We sought a venue that fulfils our promise to showcase the best sailors in the world competing on …
