A case-control study found no association between antipsychotic use and increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in elderly patients, compared with nonuse. The study, conducted by researchers in the Netherlands, analyzed drug-dispensing data from pharmacies and hospital admissions. Cases were randomly matched with age- and sex-matched controls within a cohort of 111,818 patients who received [greater than or equal to] 1 antipsychotic prescriptions between 1998 and 2008. A total of 1,032 VTE cases were identified. Among hospital admissions, 367 cases of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and 342 cases of pulmonary embolism were identified.
