Section: General News - Hundreds of government supporters demonstrated in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Friday criticising the British government for not providing adequate security for a pre planned speech by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, which led to its cancellation.

A prestigious debating society said on Wednesday it had cancelled a speech by Rajapaksa after planned protests against his visit in the United Kingdom raised security concerns.

The British High Commission in Colombo in a statement said Rajapaksa was on a private visit and the government was not involved in making arrangements for the visit.
