THE HELP story began when Datuk Dr Paul Chan Tuck Hoong and his wife Datin Chan-Low Kam Yoke, driven by the vision 'to help people succeed in life and live a life of significance', invested their life savings of RM25,000 to set up HELP Institute in 1986 with the aim of providing affordable tertiary education to the people. At that time, Malaysia had only a handful of public universities and access to them was limited. HELP Institute began with 30 students and nine staff members.

Given the altruistic intentions of its founders, it was only apt that they chose to name the institute HELP, which also stands for Higher Education Learning Program.
