SA could learn from Brazil's economic success Brazil has exploited the recent commodity boom and encouraged manufacturing while creating jobs IN ROUGHLY the same length of time that SA has been a democracy, Brazil has moved millions of people out of poverty and built an economy in which the middle class is the majority. That is the equivalent of more than 10-million South Africans becoming middle class. This does not mean Brazil has necessarily done all the rights things. There are things SA has got right that Brazil has not. Fixed investment is a case in point. SA has achieved capital formation of more than 20% of gross domestic product compared with Brazil's 16%.
