BINTULU: The flooding of the Bakun dam has begun.

Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd (SHSB), the Bakun hydroelectric project developer, closed the gates at the diversion tunnels at 10am yesterday to start the reservoir impoundment after it received the certificate for this from the Sarawak Ministry of Public Utilities.

The impoundment, or filling up of the reservoir, will take about seven months to reach the minimum operation elevation of 195m for running the turbines.

Filling the reservoir to its maximum operational level of 228m would take about 13 months, depending on the rainfall in the catchment area.
