Two common conditions--sepsis and pneumonia--used by hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are killing far too many patients, according to a study released in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Each is linked to deadly microbes, such as the bacterium methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). "In many cases, these conditions could have been avoided with better infection control in hospitals," maintains Ramanan Laxminarayan, principal investigator for Extending the Cure, a project examining antibiotic resistance based at the Washington, D.C., think tank Resources for the Future.
