[Unattributed report: "Renewable Energy Production Grew Significantly in 2009"]

The production of electricity from renewable sources increased nearly three times compared to 2008.

The growth was mainly influenced by new combined heat and power plants, which are fuelled by wood chips, announced Statistics Estonia.

Until 2007, the share of renewable energy remained around 1 per cent of total electricity consumption; in 2008, it was 2.1 per cent, but by 2009 it had grown to 6.1 per cent.
