United States/Iraq: Obama declares end of US combat mission in Iraq.
Section: General News - US President Barack Obama declared on Tuesday the end of US combat operations in Iraq.
"Tonight, I am announcing that the American combat mission in Iraq has ended," Obama said in a nationally televised speech from the Oval Office.
US forces have been in the Middle Eastern country since the US-led invasion in March 2003.
"Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country," Obama said.
"Through this remarkable chapter in the history of the United States and Iraq, we have met our responsibility. Now, it is time to turn the page," he said.
