Other than filtering waste water, wetlands are of paramount importance in ecological stabilisation and water retention. They are a habitat for important micro-organisms.

One of the reasons why there is flooding in Kampala in places like Zana, Clock Tower, Bwaise and Kalerwe is partly because wetlands have been destroyed by construction and settlement, therefore, they cannot effectively drain flood waters.

The responsible authorities like the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Wetlands Inspection division are trying their best to ensure no further degradation occurs in these wetlands but are faced with obstacles. …
